PreCharges Pneumatic are the most powerful class of air guns. They only shoot pellets. Some are capable of shooting very large pellets up to .50 caliber that can bring down large game like an Elk. These rifles are also used in Olympic games. It is not unusual to spend over $1000 for a match grade PCP rifle. They require a special compressor, Hand pump or Scuba tank to charge them up to 3000 PSI. A normal C02 powerlett hold about 800 PSI to give you an idea of how powerful they are. .I own several of them and take them to a range to fire them. These are not back yard air guns. These are very serious air guns.
Generally it means that while the pellet is driven by a compressed gas or air, that it does so from a pre-charged tank. Some of these are extremely powerful, and can be used for hunting large game.
It depends on your definition of Airgun. Are you asking about Air Soft or Pellet gun? The strongest Pellet guns are in the PCP ( Pre Charges Pneumatic ) class of air guns. These require a scuba tank to charge them to 2000 to 3000 PSI and can fire up to a 50 caliber pellet.
There are BB guns and there are Pellet guns. BB guns are not as powerful as pellet guns. BB gun can only fire a .175 caliber BB at a maximum of around 500 FPS. Pellet guns can fire a .177 pellet over 1200 FPS. The most powerful class of Pellet guns and Rifles are PCP's (PreCharged Pneumatic) air guns. These require a special pump or Scuba tank to charge them to 3000 PSI and can fire up to a 50 Caliber slug. Capable of bringing down a full size deer. Pellet guns are much more accurate and powerful than BB guns. If you want a powerful BB gun then I suggest a multy pump BB rifle.
If you are asking about airguns in general not just BB guns, but Pellet guns also. The family of PCP air guns. (Precharged Pneumatic Guns (PCPs) these use a scuba tank to charge the rifle. They can shoot up to a 50 cal bullet and bring down a Moose. As for BB guns alone most will fall into the under 500 feet per second group. Where Pellet rifles can exceed 1000 feet per second. BB guns/rifles are not as accurate as pellet guns/rifles. Because BB guns use a smooth boar barrel where pellet guns use rifling in the barrel.

Not all pellet guns use C02 some are designed to use a spring or pump. Pellet guns that use C02 are rapid fire guns and do not require re-cocking or pumping between each shot. BUT they usually have less power that spring or pump pellet guns.
Pellet guns are made from different materials. Plastic, Metal, Wood and polymer resin.
