The purim is a Jewish holy day to commemorate their deliverance from the evil Haman tried to do to them. Read the book of Esther

The Hebrew word "pur" means lot, luck or fate. "Purim" is the plural. Haman had "cast lots" to determine a day to exterminate the Jews througout the Persian empire.
