He therefore climbs the mountain to see for himself what it was that Samneric, and later Ralph, Jack and Roger, mistook for a real beast. Simon find the dead body of an airman, which is made to move in a life-like manner when gusts of wind catch the parachute which is still attached to the body. Simon frees the trapped parachute lines from the rocks, which allows the figure to slump at rest, no longer a puppet at the mercy of the wind.
