The Maltese Cross is in fact the Cross of the Sovereign Military Order of St. John, identified with Malta because their HQ was situated there for about 300 years, and in fact it is today sometimes referred to as the Sovereign Military Order of Malta.

The cross symbolizes the 8 European langues or nationalities with the Order, and the 8 virtues supposedly upheld by the Knights.

The cross today is mostly associated with medical services, since the Order was initially a hospitalier order.
