Please disregard the information about feeding solid foods, leaves, twigs, etc. to a baby deer. If the fawn is young enough to need care it is nursing and needs to be fed goats milk, which can be sweetened with molasses if needed. If you have never bottle fed a fawn before there is an excellent Wildlife site with information on caring for them. Also, it is true that you need to check your state laws concerning rehabilitating a baby deer. If it is not legal search for a licensed rehabilitation center in your area and contact them so they can arrange to get the fawn and care for it. Here is the URL for the Wildlife Site.

What does baby deers eat?

That is a simple question...

They will eat greens and twigs...

The will also eat different kinds of leaves such as...

Grape vine leaves, apple leaves, grass, sour grass, ect.

Anything green...

He/She might even eat corn...

But it has to be deer corn or natural corn out of your garden...

If you feed it food from the store it will not eat it...

You would be wasting your money...

The food from the store will bloat your baby deer and it may kill it...

There stomachs cannot handle the chemicals and stuff in the store bought food...

But I would say if you are nursing the baby...

Only keep it for a few days...

Because if you get caught you could be fined up to $4500 depending on the state your in...

So first you need to make sure it is an ophan...

This is how to tell if it is an ophan...

1) Watch it for a few days. 3-5 days

2) Did you see a dead doe?

3) Look for any signs of a doe being around...

4) There will most likely be twins or even triplets...

5) Then after a week if the baby is still in the same place then you can nurse it back to health...

If the baby doesn't eat then it is probually thirsty...

Try giving it some water...

Water is the main thing in the baby's life...

If you do end up feeding it milk...

Then DO NOT feed it cow milk...

Cow milk will kill your baby...

I would recomend Goat milk...

!GOOD LUCK!

You will need to feed it goat milk from a bottle for a few months. You'll have to pretty much corner the deer (but calmly) and try to get the nipple into the fawn's mouth. Squirting a bit in the mouth and over the nose may get it to start suckling.

Getting a little fawn to suckle from the bottle is pretty similar to getting an orphaned calf to suckle from the bottle. Only difference is that fawns are much smaller, more delicate and are often harder to look after. Some may not want to take the bottle at all, but may have to be "force-fed" it.

Normally, in the wild, a newborn deer would suckle milk from it's mother. but if it is orphaned and is under human care, goat milk is ideal from a bottle.

As babies they drink milk. But they will eat soft persimmons that have fallen to the ground. They will also eat berries, acorns, grass, and apples if there are any in the area.
