It could mean alot of different things to different people. The butterfly is often the symbol of rebirth or reawakening. As the caterpillar turns into a butterfly or butterfly emerges from cocoon it is remade into another life.

The hip should hurt less because there's more fat and muscle there than the lower back. Honestly though, the pain shouldn't be a factor in where you place it. I have a tattoo on the top of my back going down my spine and while it killed when I was getting it done, I wouldn't want it anywhere else=)

to me it seems like the "tribal" designs are VERY common for lower back tattoos on females. (guys shouldn't really get one at all) personally i went with something thinner but either way lower back tattoos are sexy. :)
