A muskrat looks something like a cross between a gopher and a beaver. They are cute if you like rodents.

There are two living species of mink, the American Mink and the European Mink. Mink are dark-colored, semi-aquatic, carnivorous mammals of the family Mustelidae, which also includes the weasels and the otters.

The American Mink has a long slim body that is covered in glossy, thick dark brown fur with a white patch under the chin and a tail that is about a third of the body length. They have short legs with partially webbed feet, which make them excellent swimmers. The thick, glossy fur can vary in color, but is generally dark brown or black, and becomes darker in winter. The American Mink is larger, and more adaptable than the European Mink. It is sometimes possible to distinguish the European and American species based on the fact that the American Mink usually lacks a large white patch on its upper lip, while the European Mink fur is normally blackish brown with a distinctive small band of white fur around the upper and lower lips and occasionally on the throat, with a long slender arched body, short legs and a short bushy tail, its feet are partly webbed and therefore useful for hunting underwater, swimming and diving. Any mink without such a patch can be identified with certainty as an American Mink, but an individual with such a patch, if encountered in continental Europe, cannot be certainly identified without looking at the skeleton. The American Mink's fur has been highly prized for its use in clothing, with hunting giving way to large-scale mink farming. Its treatment has also been a focus of animal welfare activism.

A mink's rich glossy coat in its wild state is brown, but farm bred mink can vary from white to almost black, which is reflected in the British wild mink. Their pelage is deep, rich brown, with or without white spots on the underparts, and consists of a slick, dense underfur overlaid with dark, glossy, almost stiff guard hairs, and pink.

American Minks - the male weighs about 1 kg (2.25 lbs) and is about 24 inches in length. Farm bred males can reach 7 lbs. The female weighs about 600g (1.25 lbs) and reaches a length of about 20 inches. The sizes above do not include the tail which can be from 5 to 9 inches. Domestic mink are larger than wild mink

European Mink have slender, flexible bodies, bushy tails, and webbed paws. They have a sleek summer coat, and a darker, denser, winter coat, better suited to low temperatures. Male European Mink are from 28-43 cm in body length, and weight about 900 grams, while the females are only slightly smaller at 30-40 cm long and 600 grams in weight. These figures are somewhat smaller than those for the American Mink

from other contributors:

  • Brown, black, or white in the wild. Variety of colors in fur farms. This happens often due to the lack of camouflage in a safe climate, mink breed, a new color arrives! One foot up to twenty inches long. Weasel or ferret like. Small round face, and long tail close to a 1/3 of the total body length; nose to tail.
  • In the wild it is dark brown to black often with a white patch on chin. in fur farms it is bred for many other colors including pastel, grey and white.

Mink is a group of animals ranging from aquatic to semi aquatic to land based. Their natural furs vary from white to brown to dark brown.

In view of commerciqal viability of minks the animals are bred in farms. The farms over the years had developed the mastery over the technique of cross breeding to create animals with various colours and vrious shades of same colours. As a result the Rainbow of fur colours vary from milk white to golden brown to deep brown to almost black furs from such minks.

It is reported that that even blue mink is available with connoisseurs in farming of mink.

Mink colors come in a wide variety. Wild ones are deep brown to black with white markings on the chest. Farm raised mink colors vary from blond to brown and even pastel and many variants in between.
