A miscarriage early in pregnancy can resemble a large clot of blood. Sometimes a women does not even know she is miscarrying. Most miscarriages happen before the 7th week of pregnancy (which is about 5 weeks after conception) and only 3 weeks after a missed period. Which is why most women dont even realize anything is wrong. As the embryo grows the miscarriage will be much more noticable. Usually intense cramping followed by a day or two of bleeding, eventually expelling the embryo(s).(which might resemble a tampon in size and coloring) If experiencing any signs of a miscarriage it is important to be seen by a doctor. Sometimes a womens body does not expell all the embryo and sac and this could lead to an infection. A procedure called a D & C can be preformed to prevent this.

A naturally expelled fetus usually looks like a grey sack or a large clot with what looks like veins on it. It can sometimes be black too. A fetus that has been expelled is hard to tear apart and different from normal period clots. It really depends on how far along you are.

If you are only just pregnant, it will look like a normal period - a little heavier than usual.

If you are further along, you will experience cramps for a couple of days, and heavy bleeding that will probably come and go (heavy gush then nothing). There will probably be dark clots and something that I can only describe as "watery tissue."

I have heard it could start with "brown blood" which is old blood.

Bleeding can continue for up to two weeks.

What you lose in a miscarriage varies, and can include what is mentioned above. Also, you can lose quite large reddish clumps. Sometimes you may see a tiny little baby - don't be worried about this, as at the time it isn't awful at all. In my experience, the baby is just like a very small, red version of an older baby - even at an early stage in pregnancy.

It kind of depends on how far along you are during the pregnancy. If you just missed your period and it happens then it may just seem like a normal period, possibly slightly heavier with clots and more painful. But, not everyone is the same and it could be extremely painful early on...usually there will be clots and possibly remnants of the fetus if the development has proceeded that far. Google pictures and that might give you a more realistic view, but it can be gruesome if you're faint with blood.

You would just see blood since the embryo is so small.

You wouldn't really see anything except for blood since the embryo is so small. It's just 1/6-1/4 inch (4-6 millimeters long).

At 6 months it's not a miscarriage but stillbirth. Often the baby does not come out but they don't detect a heartbeat at the clinic so they have to induce labor because he is dead.

Is there a possibility a woman may not experience bleeding during a miscarriage?

No, during miscarriage there is always bleeding. In early miscarriage the embryo and uterine lining will shed so look like a heavy menstrual bleed, further on in pregnancy there may be more obvious embryo or foetus and late pregnancy a woman would need to go to hospital to give birth to the foetus.
