Prior to Ronald Reagan's presidential election in 1980, the Republican party primarily represented the belief in a small, non intrusive national government, and left to the states the establishment of laws that were not directly reserved for the federal government by the constitution. During Reagan's tenure, however, it evolved into a party that now must curry the favor of the Christian right in order to maintain its power base, which has forced it to adopt social positions that are favored by its evangelical Christian base but by few others. This, along with a belief that budget deficits do not matter and that preemptive war is an acceptable policy, now characterizes the Republican party.

Republicans believe in some key values that they hold up. Of course, there are always going to be variations, as with any ideology and its followers, but in general, they believe that:
Good government is based upon the individual, and each person's ability, dignity and freedom must be respected.
The proper function of government is to do for the people only those things that cannot be done by individuals.
When government must act, it should so do at the level closest to those whose needs it addresses.
The free enterprise system has given this nation a way of life second to none.
Government taxation and regulation should be held in check.
Government waste and overspending must be eliminated.
The US Congress must reduce the national debt.
Job creation should be encouraged through economic policy that
stimulates the private sector.
The cost of federal and state mandates may not be passed on to the
local level.
The genius of our American system stems from the Constitution.
some of the beliefs that a Republicans believe is, they think thatless federal government is better, that state and local governments should haave more control, usually in favor of reducing taxes, and sometimes accused of favoring "big business" and "the rich"
In general, Republicans believe in smaller government and more power to the states. They are also conservative on social issues and usually fight for lower taxes.
You must remember that the US has a two-party system. In general both parties believe in anything that will get them in power and/or keep them in power. At one time the Republicans believed in freeing the slaves and giving them the vote, assuming correctly that most of them would vote Republican. At one time, the Republicans were trust-busters- pushing laws to restrict big business. At one time the Republicans opposed any military build-up and the idea of keeping a standing army in peace time.
