White - Beginner

Blue - For the most part, the majority of the skills sets are known and can be executed with proficiency. Practitioner at a blue belt level should be able to maintain control over a rolling session with practitioner of a lower level.

Purple - All skill sets are known and techniques are much more refined then that of a blue belt. Practitioner at a blue belt has the knowledge to teach and can grade white belts up to blue belt level. Practitioner at a purple belt level should be able to maintain control over a rolling session with practitioner of a lower level.

Brown - All skill sets are known. Practitioner is at near-mastery of the art. Practitioner at a brown belt has the knowledge to grade white belts up to purple belt level. May teach independently (run a school) without the direct aid of a black belt present.

Black - Mastery of the art is known. Practitioner should be proficient in skill sets, execution of techniques, be able to control rolling sessions over students of lower belts and should be proficient in the skill of teaching. Practitioner should have the correct mentality and project a positive attitute.

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu has two different ranking systems, though it does vary slightly depending on the school or organization. One for adults (16 and over )and one for children (15 and under). Child ranks include white (4 degrees), yellow (4 degrees), orange (4 degrees), green (4 degrees). Adult ranks are white (4 degrees), blue (4 degrees), purple (4 degrees), brown (4 degrees), black (1st - 6th degree), red/black (7th - 8th degree), red (9th - 10th degree).

The minimum age for a blue belt is 16 and 19 for black belt. Only the original Gracie brothers (Carlos, Ozwaldo, Gastao Jr., Jorge, and Helio) will ever hold the rank of 10th degree.

In UFC Undisputed 2009 is Judo or BJJ better for defence?

Judo is great in the clinch but worthless on the ground, BJJ is great on the ground, but worthless in the clinch. Neither style is better than the other on defense, it depends on how you fight. Judo is good to keep you off the ground, or at least off of your back. BJJ is good because if you get put on your back you can submit or reverse with ease.
