A turtle's spine/backbone is attached internally to its shell - so to take off the shell is to rip the backbone out of the body and kill the turtle.

A turtle shell consists of two parts - the carapace (the upper convex shell) and the plastron (the lower concave shell) which are joined together by two connecting bone bridges.

The backbone is attached to the the carapace at the top, and to the ribs on the bottom sides.

As a result, most of the length of the turtle's backbone is fixed in place as one bone! with only the tail and neck retaining flexibility, so when Donatello, Leonardo, Raphael and Michelangelo partied, they definitely tried to avoid dancing.

No. turtles cannot live without their shells. This is mainly because their shell is connected directly to their spine. if their shell were to be removed, you would break their back in the process. now that doesn't mean that they can't live without a large section of their shells missing. it's quite common in the wild actually

No, a turtle cannot leave it's shell. It is attached to the inside of the shell. It will however keep growing bigger as the turtle grows bigger.

Does a turtles shell come off in winter?

Turtle shells are a part of a turtle's body! A shell is basically made of bones (60 meshed together) and their spine is actually embedded into its shell. Contrary to what they show in cartoons, turtles can't take of their shell any more than you can take off your skin.

Can tape rek a turtles shell?

I don't think that tape would be good for a turtle's shell. It could melt then stick to and burn the turtles shell when he is under his heat lamp or take off a scute or two when you tear it off. Taking off a scute early will reveal the bone under and that can develop an infection and hurt the turtle. If you are having trouble telling your turtles apart and that is why you want to put tape on one then I would recommend looking at the turtles bellies or plastrons. The plastrons often have unique marking on them which would make it easy to tell the turtles apart. Eventually you will be able to tell the turtles apart just by looking at their shells. I can and I have 15 turtles :). But anyway please don't put tape on your turtle, it could fall off in the water and then get eaten by a turtle too.

Is a turtles shell attashed to is back?

Oddly enough, a turtle's shell is actually attached to it's body. It is not like it can take it off and find a new one. A turtle's shell is actually part of it's vertabre. It's like extended bone. Otherwise, it couldn't grow as the turtle does.

What helps the turtle to get in their shell?

Turtles do not 'get into' their shells, they are born in their shells which are part of their bodies (they can not come off) and their shells grow with them.

Do turtles eat clams?

You should not feed them wild clams because they may harbor parasites or diseases which harm your turtle. Feed them fresh clams from the supermarket. Make sure to take the shell off...

Are turtles killed for their shell?

Why would you want to paint a turtle's shell anyway - unless it's for identification. A more sensible procedure would be micro-chipping ! It's permanent and doesn't wash off ! Anyway - to answer the question - so long as you use lead-free & solvent-free paint it shouldn't harm the turtle.

Can turtles walk around naked?

All animals walk around naked except us. Humans are the only animal that wears clothes. If you are asking whether a turtle can come out of the shell, then the answer is no. The shell is part of the turtle, and if the shell is peeled off, part of the turtle is ripped off and the animal will die. It would be like pulling off your ribcage.
