I believe that volcanologist work with volcanoes, even those that have been stagnant, to determine the chances of revival and their yearly growth. Most volcanolgists would want to work in the areas that receive a lot of action because this makes their job a bit earsier and more enjoyable to do. I always wanted to be a volcanologist, but I am settling for photography. Volcanologists need a very thorough understanding of mathematics to be fully equipped to do this job.
