Tylenol 3 contains codeine. The amount of codeine can vary depending on where you buy it or what you are prescribed. Codeine is considered a "pro-drug" since it does not have a direct effect in your body. Rather, codeine is metabolized into morphine (among other things) when it enters your body. Roughly 5-10% of the amount of codeine you consume will be converted into morphine, so taking 100mg of codeine is equivalent to taking 10mg of morphine.

Consuming codeine as prescribed will usually result only in the alleviation of pain, since opiates are endorphin analogues, and therefore have an inhibitory effect on pain receptors in your nervous system. Research indicates that people in pain are less likely to have euphoria (an opiate "high") from opiate intake because the opiate molecules are busy blocking pain receptors.

Consumed recreationally, codeine can produce euphoria and a "body high". Opiates slow your mental functions and can cloud your thinking. The most common side effects of codeine include itching, nausea, vomiting, drowsiness, dry mouth, miosis, orthostatic hypotension, urinary retention, depression and constipation.

*DO NOT* consume Tylenol 3 with *ANY* alcohol. There are two reasons for this. First, alcohol combined with acetaminophen (Tylenol itself) has a very damaging effect on the liver, and can easily cause permanent liver failure and death. Second, alcohol is a depressant, and when combined with other depressants (codeine) can cause respiratory failure and death.

*DO NOT* consume more than 1 gram of acetaminophen at a time. At maximum, you should take 1 gram of acetaminophen every 6 hours.

*DO NOT* consume more than 4 grams of acetaminophen a day. Acute acetaminophen poisoning is by far the number one reason of liver failure in the united states.

*DO NOT* consume more Tylenol 3 than your doctor and the label recommends.

*DO NOT* use Tylenol 3 for anything other than alleviating pain, and don't use it for longer periods of time. Codeine, among other opiates, is very addictive. Opiate addiction completely ruins many people's lives. You must ask yourself, do you want to chain yourself to an addiction that will destroy you?
