Answer

AM stands for ante meridiem. Ante is before, and meridiem means noon. Both are derived from the latin words ante, meaning "before" and meri-(middle) diem (day), noon.

A.M. (or a.m.) is the abbreviation of ante meridiem. It means "before noon." This is virtually never written out when writing the time. Note that 12:00 a.m. is considered to be, by convention, midnight, whereas 12:00 p.m. is noon. But that causes tons of confusion, so you should always write 12 midnightand 12 noon.
