Mostly a pull from the three main credit reporting agencies, Transunion, Equifax and Experian. This will show any recent judgments related to eviction, which is often the main reason for the background check, but can also show if the renter's debt picture (and income picture to the extent it's listed) leaves enough money to pay the rent. These will also show recent bankruptcies (which from a landlords point of view, are oddly a good thing).
More expensive background checks may divulge criminal convictions and charges, which are probably more than a landlord needs to know. Also included are prior addresses, which can be queried for references.
The most expensive legal, civilian backgruond checks may include international travel, product and service preference, names of friends, family, neighbors, schools attended, children (and their schools attended), sometimes academic performance, possession of firearms licenses, lists of owned real property, and quite a lot more. For purposes of background checking a renter, this would be overkill.
Gray Intel backgruond checks can reveal far more than this.
Generally:
1. Experian, Equifax, Transunion credit scores (Most landlords look at experian, which is out of 850)
2. Previous eviction records.
3. Criminal background check
The above three are usually bundled for landlords. Some landlords run a scorex model, which tests the likelihood of your defaulting on your rent. Those include records from previous landlords and bounced check history.

Typically, it is a criminal background check.
yes it is
What shows up on a background check for basic apartment inquiry?
It differs from apartment complex to apartment complex. But apartment complexes should do a credit check to make sure that they will be getting their money from their tenants.
This should have been disclosed when the landlord performed the background check, before the lease was signed. Well, if the landlord had an application for an apartment to which the tenant denied having been evicted if there were questions that asked such, then the landlord can terminate the lease for the tenant having falsified the information given.
Check bookstores and type in the description
Usually includes routine FBI.
If the low income apartment called and you had passed the background check, but they need more information, you have not yet got the apartment. After you turn in the income proof, they may go ahead and approve you.
No, but check with the state authorities.
This depends how long it takes to get your background check back.
A criminal background check is permissible if a prospective tenant grants the landlord / manager written permission to do so. That being said, most landlords do not look at criminal history as much as rental history and credit score.
My roommate and I were looking for an out on our lease, and had a similar question. We were able to get a great deal of information at www.apartmentleasebreakers.com. Check it out.
