Using the principles of Biology and chemistry, environmental engineers develop solutions to environmental problems. They are involved in water and air pollution control, recycling, waste disposal, and public health issues. Environmental engineers conduct hazardous-waste management studies in which they evaluate the significance of the hazard, offer analysis on treatment and containment, and develop regulations to prevent mishaps. They design municipal water supply and industrial wastewater treatment systems. They conduct research on proposed environmental projects, analyze scientific data, and perform quality control checks.

Environmental engineers are concerned with local and worldwide environmental issues. They study and attempt to minimize the effects of acid rain, global warming, automobile emissions, and ozone depletion. They also are involved in the protection of wildlife.

Many environmental engineers work as consultants, helping their clients to comply with regulations and to clean up hazardous sites.

"Chemical engineers" are people who use their knowledge of chemistry in an industrial setting, to create new substances and products and improve the quality and production process of existing ones. They are primarily interested in finding efficient, economical ways to turn raw materials into high-quality finished goods. In addition to doing this, they're also often employed to design manufacturing facilities. The position is typically collaborative, with people in this job working together with product designers, marketers, and legal staff. A wide range of industries regularly introduce new products or improve existing ones, so a chemical engineer can often find jobs in industries ranging from aerospace to electronics, textile manufacturing, and environmental management.

Research and Development

People in this position often help research and develop new products. This includes studying how compounds react with different types of materials and working with product designers to make things that are sturdy, functional, and attractive. For instance, a textile company with a new type of synthetic fiber would likely hire a chemical engineer to identify and develop uses for it. He or she could tell the company what uses it's best suited for --- that it works well for car upholstery but not stretch fabrics, for example --- as well as advise them as to other potential uses, such as turning it into a powder and mixing it into plastic products to strengthen them. They can help prevent and troubleshoot technical problems that come up during product development.

Designing Facilities

Many manufacturing companies also hire chemical engineers to help design efficient manufacturing facilities. This includes coming up with the layout of factory floors, the creation of components and equipment, and the design of control measures to make sure that the facility safely handles materials and maintains the desired level of quality in its products. Additionally, a chemical engineer may help develop processes that manufacturing plants can use to operate in environmentally friendly manners.

Collaboration

A chemical engineer often works together with other people in the manufacturing process, including marketers and managers. He or she can help the advertising department understand the benefits of having a particular substance in a product, and can help create a product that positively reflects the goals of a company, which helps the sales end of the business because it increases brand awareness. Chemical engineers also collaborate with managers as well as legal teams to ensure that the materials used in the processing and finishing of end products comply with governmental and industry standards.

Education and Training

To become a chemical engineer, a person generally needs to have at least a bachelor's degree in chemistry, chemical engineering, bi-molecular engineering, or a similar field. Many people also get master's degrees in a specific area, such as plastics engineering or food science. In the US, licensure as a Professional Engineer (PE) is encouraged, but not required. This requires a combination of an approved degree, work experience, and passing several exams.

Work Environment

The exact duties that chemical engineers carry out also largely depend on how much experience they have. Entry-level workers tend to carry out basic tasks, whereas those with much experience tend to assume roles with more responsibility and independence. Some manage teams of engineers themselves, while others propose and carry out research projects. Experienced chemical engineers may also do consulting work, or have a lot of freedom when it comes to choosing what they want to work on.

Engineer has big role to play as far far ecological control is concerned. Engineering is a art of utilizing the great sources of power in nature. It is a very vital organ for the benefit, convenience and survival of mankind. The branch of engineering involves manpower, money, materials, machines and energy. Engineers are responsible for the construction of dams, water supply and sanitary schemes, industries power plants etc.

Engineers also play an important role in other fields such as Metallurgy, chemistry, nuclear physics, atomic energy. Environmental protection is a global problem. This problem can't almon be solved by the government. People's participation is essentially required for this purpose as ultimately everything is in the interest of mankind. The industry is mainly responsible for environmental pollution and such as, it has to play major role in protecting the environment.

Engineer plays important role towards environmental protection as is evident from the following points :-

[1]. He can help in selecting such a site which ;

(i) is pollution free

(ii) has less chances of atmosphere pollution

(iii) capacity to absorb pollutants.

(iv) is gifted with sufficient quantity of pure water.

[2]. He can help in layout plan in such a way that ;

(i) atmosphere is not polluted.

(ii) pollution, if any, affect very few people.

(iii) pollutants do not move outside the factory but are absorbed within the space available for factory.

[3]. He can plan out some space within the factory premises for the disposal of poisonous waste material ;

[4]. He can plan such a short route of disposal of pollutants in natural stream or rivers that the habitation and vegetation is least affected.

[5]. He can play a vital role in selecting the use of such building material which are least affected by pollutants.

[6]. He can plan in such a way that minimum area is polluted.

[7]. He can try to justify the social obligations of the factory towards the society.

Why is chemical engineers referred to as a universal engineers?

Chemical engineers is professed in designing a production plants, the scope of knowledge must cover from mechanic, civil, electrical, environmental impacts to management. Chemical engineers, while may not know in depth of the above mentioned field, must be able to coordinate the work of various engineering field and communicated with the managerial levels.

Chemical Process Equipment is a professional book by Couper, Penny and Fair PHD. It was released in September 2012. It is for engineers to design and maintain chemical process.

What is the best part about being a Chemical Engineer?

A chemical engineer is on average, the highest paid engineer in the world. A chemical engineer is the only engineer who applies physics & mathematics as well as chemistry, biology and economics. A chemical engineer is the most diverse of all engineers. People and the economy depends on chemical engineers since he is directly/indirectly responsible with petrol,oil,food,cloth fiber,medicine. A chemical engineer is the one who can bring cleaner and a greener environment.

What is a chemical enginer?

From the U.S. Department of Labor: Chemical engineers build a bridge between science and manufacturing, applying the principles of chemistry and engineering to solve problems involving the production or use of chemicals. They design equipment and develop processes for large-scale chemical manufacturing, plan and test methods of manufacturing products and treating byproducts, and supervise production. Chemical engineers also work in a variety of manufacturing industries other than chemical manufacturing, such as those producing electronics, photographic equipment, clothing, and pulp and paper. They also work in the healthcare, biotechnology, and business services industries. The knowledge and duties of chemical engineers overlap many fields. Chemical engineers apply principles of chemistry, physics, mathematics, and mechanical and electrical engineering. (See chemists and materials scientists; physicists and astronomers; mechanical engineers; electrical and electronics engineers, except computer; and mathematicians elsewhere in the Handbook.) They frequently specialize in a particular chemical process such as oxidation or polymerization. Others specialize in a particular field, such as materials science, or the development of specific products such as fertilizers and pesticides, automotive plastics, or chlorine bleach. They must be aware of all aspects of chemicals manufacturing and how it affects the environment, the safety of workers, and customers. Because chemical engineers use computer technology to optimize all phases of research and production, they need to understand how to apply computer skills to chemical process analysis, automated control systems, and statistical quality control.
