Pet peeves are annoyances, usually minor ones, that take on large proportions with the person who is irritated by them.

We've all seen someone practically "go off" when something minor goes wrong. That person might be just be impatient, or stressed out. But some people just about go nuts if they spill coffee on themselves, drop a book, make a typo, or are in some way "insulted" or "infringed on" by someone else. Some examples might be in order.

A girl goes off on her roommate because the roommate left an empty soda can on the counter. The first girl hates empty drink containers around on the counter, the table, or anywhere else. It freaks her out. [An empty container is not the end of the world, but the one girl acts like it is. Empty containers around the house are one of the girl's pet peeves.]

A man yells at his son for spilling a glass of juice. He can't stand spilled drinks. [The child is young, and spills happen. The man's reaction is out of proportion because he reacts badly to any spilled drinks, and kids spill things. Spills are one of the man's pet peeves.]

A woman leaves her glasses somewhere in the house, and cannot recall where. She runs around cursing loudly while looking for them. [We sometimes misplace things. The woman's actions are much out of proportion for the difficulty. We sometimes set something down and forget where. She just goes ape when she puts her glasses down and cannot find them. She doesn't react this way when she misplaces her keys, even when she is running late.]

Some pet peeves can include people snapping gum, interrupting them, and when people talk about African Animals.

Pet peeves are things that are minor, yet still get on someone's nerves. It may be using the wrong form of the word 'Your' and 'You're.' A pet peeve may also be something like leaving the cap off the toothpaste.

A pet peeve is a rather minor frustration that for some reason really makes a person mad. These are very individual. Your pet peeves may not bother me at all. Here are some typical pet peeves: * People who take their dog for a walk but don't pick up the droppings * smacking gum loudly * sniffing over and over instead of using a Kleenex * using a cell phone in public and talking very loudly A pet peeve is something very trivial that a particular person finds extremely irritating.

Derived from the adjective 'peevish' first attest in 1393, peyvesshe "perverse, capricious, silly," of uncertain origin, possibly modeled on Latin perversus "reversed, perverse," past participle of pervertere "to turn about" pet peeve "the thing that provokes one most" is first attested 1919
