In Egyptian hieroglyphics, it is a group of symbols which represent a person's name. To a firearms collector, it is a military inspectors stamp on the stock of a gun.
I believe that is has something to do with Egyptian hieroglyphics. It was an oval shaped figure that was used to contain the names of royalty in ancient Egypt.
A structure or figure
The symbol today known as a "cartouche" (the French word for a paper cartridge used to load 18th century muskets, because it reminded French troops of that object) was originally the hieroglyph Sn (shen), a circle of rope with a line across the bottom standing for eternal protection.
The Egyptian word for a cartouche was Snw (shenu), meaning "encircled" - it encircled the name of a royal person, to protect the name and give it eternal value. In order to allow space for a royal name and often royal titles, the circular shape was elongated into an oval with straight sides, still with a horizontal line at the base.
Only royal names and titles were written inside a cartouche; in the Late Period even the Roman Emperors would have their names recorded in this way.
It's a rounded oblong containing small pictures representing sounds which together make up a name.
Most of the symbols represented the consonants of a person's name. The final symbol was a determiner, which indicated gender and/or status.

Tutankhamun had several names, including one that reads nb.xprw.r' (Nebkheperure). The name most familiar today is the one written twt.'nx.'mn in hieroglyphs; the cartouche begins with the three signs that spell the name of the god Amun:'mn. This is always written first, even though it is pronounced later in the name (a mark of respect). Next come the bread-chick-bread combination that spells twt, meaning image or likeness. Next is the 'nx sign, known today as ankh, "living". Finally are three signs expressing the standard formula: ruler, high priest, king of Upper Egypt. So the main elements of the name mean "Living image of Amun".
A cartouche is a person's name written in hieroglyphics. It is a line, sometimes two, of hieroglyphics with a circle around it. Cleopatra's cartouche would simply be her name written in hieroglyphics.
Cartouche's birth name is Farid Bendjafar.
