RAM stores frequently used data from the hard disk. This is necessary as the hard disk is many times slower than RAM, which means it will take much more longer for the computer to read the data.

What PC Random Access Memory or RAM is used for in a computer, is to run any type of desktop based applications, and is also used for when Surfing the web. Basically RAM is a tempory storage device that is used to store any information that is from applications or the use of a browser, but due to it being volatile memory all data that was stored in the RAM is lost when the computer is turned off.

RAM (Random Access Memory) or main memory is where a computer stores programs, applications or data that is being used. Essentially the more RAM a computer has the more programs the computer can run simultaneously without showing a large slowdown in performance.

Since RAM is volatile memory it is basically only used when the computer is powered on. This is different from a hard drive which is non-volatile and will store data without the computer being powered on.

Random Access Memory, or volatile memory, is used by the system to store data for processing by a computer's central processing unit (CPU), also known as the processor. RAM stores the data in memory cells that are arranged in grids much like the cells are arranged in a spreadsheet, from which data, in the binary form of 1's and 0's, can be accessed and transferred at random to the processor for processing by the system's software.

The data stored in a hard disk drive (HDD) cannot be accessed at random. Whole sectors, containing blocks of data, are transferred from a hard disk drive, placed in a large swap file on the same drive, and only then are selected files transferred to RAM for random access by the processor, which is itself only performing the instructions of the system's operating system (usually Windows), and its application software.

When the computer is turned off, all of the data in the RAM memory is lost, hence its alternative name of volatile memory, whereas all of the data on a hard disk drive is retained permanently until it is intentionally erased. The motherboard (or mainboard) manual (that should be provided with a new or a second-hand PC) will provide all of the details about the different types of supported RAM, and the various combinations of modules per bank for each type that can be successfully installed.

Ram (Random Access Memory) is used in computers to store temporary instructions and data needed to complete tasks. This enables the computer's CPU (Central Processing Unit), to access instructions and data stored in memory very quickly.

Random Access Memory (RAM) is the volatile memory that you use when using a computer. If you don't save any work to the internal hard drive, or to an external hard drive or flash drive, then all your work will be lost once you log out or close down the computer.
