dCi mean "direct common-rail injection". The Renault user manuals also state "high pressure" in brackets as clarification. So, often combined with a turbo, its a way of getting fuel into the engine under high pressure to increase efficiency and therefore economy. The injection method is "common" in that all cylinders share this same chamber of consistant, pressurised fuel.

This is also refered to as HDi and CDR.

It's the high pressure fuel rail and the computer controlled electronic injectors that make all the difference. In the common rail system, the fuel pump charges the fuel rail at a pressure of up to 25,000 psi--but unlike old indirect injection pumps--it is not involved in fuel discharge. The computer controls the release of tiny jets of compressed gas directly into the cylinders.
