DPI stands for dots per inch, it is often used to measure the quality of scanners and printers. The higher the DPI, the more dots, can be printed in an inch, and thus the higher the resolution. The same applies in scanners, the higher the DPI, the more dots per inch are uploaded and thus the higher the resolution.
