Your first cousin is someone who has the same grandparent as you have, i.e. someone who is the child of the brother or sister of one of your parents.

If you and another person are first cousins, once removed, one of you is the child of the first cousin of the other.

Said another way, my first cousin has a daughter. That daughter is my first cousin once removed. My first cousin's grandchild is my first cousin twice removed.

Your first cousin is the child of your aunt or uncle. That person is the same generation as you, when counting generations from your common grandparents.

A first cousin once removed is one generation different from you, counting from the common ancestor. One twice removed is two generations separated.

So, your first cousin twice removed is either the grandchild of your first cousin or the first cousin of one of your grandparents.

That means they are the 16 generations off your common ancestor, while you are only 2 off.

Both kinds of cousin are about equally distant and it is rarely worth the effort to try to quantify that.

What does a first cousin 23 percent removed mean?

There is no such thing as any kind of cousin removed by any amount of percent. "First cousin 23 percent removed" is simply nonsense. You could have a first cousin twice removed, or three times removed or 23 times removed. You first cousin is the child of you aunt or uncle. You first cousin once removed is the child of your first cousins, three times removed is the grandchild, etc. But remember that you are the first cousin once removed to the child of your first cousin. So you also can have a first cousin once removed who is the first cousin of your parent; a first cousin twice removed who is your grandparent's first cousin, etc.

What does it mean when someone is your cousin once removed?

Cousin once removed means that the cousin relationship is removed by one generation. Example: Your dad's first cousin would be your first cousin once removed because you are from one generation later than your dad. Your first cousin once removed would be your childs's first cousin twice removed because your child is two generations later than your dad, etc.

Are you and your first cousin twice removed close or distant cousins?

Basically First cousins mean you have the same grandparents, but twice removed means there's TWO generations between you. So they are much older or much younger than you. see related links. Whether that is a close or distant cousin relationship is a matter of opinion and circumstance.

What is the relationship between you and your first cousin's child?

It depends...they may be no relation at all, or your cousin, or even your brother or sister. For instance: your cousin's cousin may be your father's brother's son's mother's sister's daughter! In that case you are not related at all. However, your cousin's cousin may be a mutual cousin to both you and your cousin. Or your cousin's cousin may refer back to either yourself or a sibling.

What does term once removed mean?

When the word "removed" is used to describe a relationship, it indicates that the two people are from different generations. You and your first cousins are in the same generation (two generations younger than your grandparents), so the word "removed" is not used to describe your relationship. The words "once removed" mean that there is a difference of one generation. For example, your mother's first cousin is your first cousin, once removed. This is because your mother's first cousin is one generation younger than your grandparents and you are two generations younger than your grandparents. This one-generation difference equals "once removed". Twice removed means that there is a two-generation difference. You are two generations younger than a first cousin of your grandmother, so you and your grandmother's first cousin are first cousins, twice removed.

How can your mother's first cousin be your cousin once removed but also a cousin by marriage is also a cousin once removed?

Your mother's first cousin is always your first cousin, once removed. That is at the core of what first cousins and removed cousins are. That relationship will never change; your mother's first cousin will always be your first cousin, once removed. The term "cousin by marriage" is relatively new and undefined, and for many it really does not mean anything. Some people use the term to refer to someone who has married a cousin. In that sense, if someone marries your "first cousin once removed," that person would be your "first cousin once removed by marriage." It is completely incorrect to claim that someone who marries your first cousin is your "first cousin once removed" simply because of that marriage.
