In taxonomy, animals are grouped in categories based on synapomorphies, or shared derived characteristics. Species are a more exclusive group of a certain genus. The basic groupings from most inclusive to least inclusive are: Kingdom, phylum, class, order, family, genus, and finally species. Therefore, the genus can include several species that are very closely related to each other.

Assuming that the binomial/scientific name was written correctly, there are two ways you can use to distinguish between the name of the genus and the name of the species:

  1. The genus is the one written with a capital letter and the species name always starts with a lowercase letter.
  2. The genus name is always written first and the species name is always written second.

This is the way that plants and animals have be separated or divided to see how they are related to each other. The division called genus is the second to last and species is the last. Our grouping is:Kingdom
Animalia (animals) Phylum
Chordata (chordates) Subphylum
Vertebrata (vertebrates) Class
Mammalia (mammals) Order
Primates Family
Hominidae (hominids) Genus

If you're trying to explain it to a kid I'd say that genus is a big group of animals with lots of species inside it. A species is just one kind of animal.
