Traditionally a hacker is someone who is skilled at subverting technological systems and making them do things they were not originally designed to do. It later came to be almost synonymous with expert computer programmers.
More recently it's common use has come to refer to someone who breaks into computer systems. While these people are hackers of a sort they are resented by the original oldskool hackers because of the bad associations they bring to the word. The oldskool hackers call these people (the criminal ones) crackers, whereas the rest of the world separates hackers into 3 groups...
Black hat = a hacker with criminal intent
Grey hat = a hacker with no particular agenda
White hat = a 'good' hacker who helps secure systems
In simple terms... A computer hacker - is a person who deliberately (and illegally) sets out to interrogate a computer system they have no right to access - in order to (a) plant a virus or (b) view the information on that computer.
