You will not get what you want without giving something in return.

Meaning: To spend or used something up but still have it; to have two things when you must choose one.

Example: You can either go to a movie or get Pizza, but you can't have your cake and eat it too.

Origin: This saying started sometime in the 1540's. Once you've eaten a piece of cake, you don't have it anymore. So you have to a make a decision to eat it or save it. In the same way, money that you've spent is money that you no longer have in your pocket. You have to choose what to do with what you have. The original version of this expression is"you can't eat your cake and have it too."

This saying never made sense to me. After all, what is the point of having a cake if you can't eat it? I think it may be a sarcastic way of saying you can have something you want, exactly the way you want it.

The correct expression is: "You can't eat your cake and have it too". Think about it, America ... the only way you can eat your cake is if and when you have it! Once you have already eaten your cake, you can't have it any longer. Hence, you can't eat your cake and still have it! Please stop butchering the English language. Stop making mainstream what the lower classes ignorantly misstate.

I realize this is a long road, but I'm on a mission to make Americans say things the right way and not merely capitulate to ignorant folk saying things the wrong way!
