The term interdependent means "mutually or concurrently dependent". This means that all members of a group need each other. This can be applied to ecology (the balance of nature) and to commercial activities between regions or countries. It is used to indicate that, in most cases, no one is truly self-sufficient.

It can either mean doing something by yourself or if a country becomes independant, it means that Another Country isn't ruling your country any more. That is why Americans celebrate Interdependance day.

"Dependence" comes from the word "depend" which originally meant "to hang from something". Nowadays it is more often seen in its figurative sense of relying on something else for support. "I depend on coffee to keep me awake". The prefix "inter-" means between: international flights are between nations, interdepartmental memos are between departments.

Things which are interdependent are those which rely on each other for support; interdependence is the state of being interdependent.

An example would be two countries, one of which had oil and the other grain -- in time they might become interdependent: each dependent on the other for their survival. Historically, however, lack of resources caused wars rather than cooperative trade.
