What does it mean to be a blood sister with someone?

Being a blood brother(or sister I suppose) was an old tradition of confirming deep friendship by mixing blood. In its most typical form the persons would each cut their palm and then shake hands - but any similar ritual would do.

With what we know about blood borne diseases today, this isn't really advisable any more.
