Skepticism is generally viewed as a reluctance to believe in something. Skepticists demand evidence, and cold hard facts that can be tested and retested.
That is basically the basis for scientific study. I once heard a quote that described the state perfectly, but unfortunately cannot remember who said it or the exact wording. It went something like this: "Science is the process of dreaming a million magical and fascinating possibilities, and then methodically destroying each and every one until only one dull, simple world-view remains." The process isn't quite that devastating, but for a research scientists, the vast majority of ideas and experiments that they try out will fail.
The reason that science is so trustworthy is the level of evidence that is demanded before an idea is accepted as truth, and even then, scientists must be willing to reexamine their fundamental ideas.
