In the Hebrew scripture, Moses lifted a snake (serpent) on a rod to heal people who were dying of poisonous snake bites. The word for those particular desert snakes (serpents) is loosely transliterated "serephim" meaning "burning ones." Scholars relate that name to the red or fiery color of the snakes, or to the burning pain of their bite. (The same word, serephim, refers to an order of angelic beings.)
