What does it mean to wear white for someone in the Chinese culture?

[Edit]
In ancient China, this was a way to express grief when someone died, In the funeral of the death as well as a period of time after the death, his/her relatives (especially sons and daughters) had to wear white. But nowadays in China this custom is rarely seen, people only wear a piece of black in his/her arm for some time in case of the death of a person close to his/her.
