What does it mean when a car smokes from the tail pipe?

[Edit]

Answer

Burning oil, either over filled passed the "Full" level, or piston rings need replaced.

Answer

it also depends on the color of the smoke. black smoke is usually a rich fuel mixture, white is either coolant/antifreeze and in cold weather its condensation, blue gray is oil as mention on previous answer.(this varies slightly for diessel engines)
