[This usually means that the dog is a mutt and has some Chow breed in it. Chows have black (purple) tongues, so when they have mix breed pups, the puppies have purple dots on their tongues.]

CORRECTION: A number of breeds have black or blue tongues. If every dog that has blotches on its tongue were part Chow, all I can say is that those Chows have surely gotten around!

Plus, my dog is a registered purebred! She is a blue merle Australian Shepherd. I've wondered if the blue merle gene sometimes causes black splotches on the tongue. Even her skin is merled, not just her hair!

Could somebody answer this question who doesn't feel inclined to be insulting? Thanks.

Do you have any orange tabby cat? Most the time the black spots are common and are nothing to worry about. It is the cats coloring, much like freckles. If there are black spots on his/her chin, it could be feline acne which can be reduced by using metal feeding bowls instead of a plastic ones. If the spots are not causing your cat any discomfort or are not increasing in size- I wouldn't worry too much.

Black spots on the tongue usually indicate normal color mutations in healthy dogs. Sometimes such a mark is indicative of a completely black ancestor; one often sees such discolorations in Golden Retrievers.

Note that a black mark on the tongue can be a sign of cancer, especially if it seems swollen or contorted, or is oozing fluid.

Black spots on a cat's tongue is an indication of a bigger problem. Cat's tongues should be pink, and if you notice blackness, bring your cat to the veterinary immediately.

When a cat has white stuff on her tongue, it is very possible that the cat has thrush. Thrush is a fungal infection, and a vet can prescribe antifungal medication to treat this.

Generally, cat's tongues are pink in color. If your cat's whole tongue is purple in color, this can be an indication of a problem, and should seek medical attention.
