your fuel mixture is too rich it may be time to change your spark plug and/or air filter. a bad spark plug will not burn all the fuel correctly and a clogged air filter will not provide enough air for a good air/fuel mixture. Actually it depends on what color smoke is coming from it. Black smoke is fuel, however, blue smoke is oil, broken ring and such
No you can't use a golf cart mower on a lawn mower. You have to find a muffler that matches the make and model of the lawn mower.

Many times it just means that the mower has been leaned over on it's side too far and oil has gotten into the breather. It will burn this off after a while. If it persists then you have an internal problem in the engine and are getting alot of blowby into the breather.
A sheared flywheel key (advanced timing) will often cause a red hot muffler. This happens when the mower blade hits a stump, rock, etc.

Answer It could be that you need a new muffler. After so long the baffling inside the muffler can burn out. Also make sure that the muffler is not cracked or that exhaust is not leaking before it gets into the muffler. At the gasket between the muffler and the engine. Hope ths helps.
It just unscrews from the motor
1. tipped on the muffler side or 2. blown engine
Yes, and very often. The internal baffles are very prone to corrosion due to accumulation of moisture inside the muffler
only 2 ways! 1- away from the spark plug ^ v. 2 muffler toward the ground < >.
