除夜の鐘 /jo ya no ka ne/ is a traditional temple bell, which is rung in temples all over Japan on the New Year's Eve, few minutes to the arrival of New Year's Day (Dec 31st) in Japan. It strikes 108 times, for which there are some theories as to why that certain number is used, one of most commonly known ones is to indicate the number of 煩悩 /bon nou/ (Sanskrit: Klesha) which is a Buddhist term referring to 108 earthly desires that pollute human spirit.
107 of these strikes are performed before New Year's Day's arrival, and the last one is performed after transition into the new year. It's broadcast from NHK nationwide.
