it comes from the latin word" Libra " meaning scales,which is also a roman unit of measurement that is roughly equivalent to a pound. The abbreviation of Libra is lb.
Since that measurement is just about the same as a pound the abbreviations "lb " and 'lbs" are just carried forward for pounds.
