A missionary is a person sent on a mission.

It is mainly used to refer to christians who go to others to teach them about The Bible. Missionaries go to other people in obedience to Christ's command in the gospel of Matthew.

Mat 28:19 Go, then, to all peoples everywhere and make them my disciples: baptize them in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit,

Mat 28:20 and teach them to obey everything I have commanded you. And I will be with you always, to the end of the age."

The word 'missionary' is not in the Bible. But, what we call a missionary today was called an evangelist at that time. (Acts 21:8, 2 Timothy 4:5)
