Organic farming means using on-farm resources as much as possible. The point's to control, as much as possible, what goes into soil and gets into crops. It also means using resources efficiently. So organic farming seeks to maximize soil and plant health. In contrast, conventional commercial farming seeks to maximize per acre yield and total outputs. And it means living respectfully with nature. So organic farming chooses biological, cultural, mechanical and non-toxic responses to production issues. For example, soil infertility's treated by way of compost, organic mulches, and slow-release organic fertilizers. Pests are controlled by slower-acting but more environmentally-friendly botanicals such as pyrethrin, horticultural oils, and insecticidal soaps. They're also controlled by natural enemies such as the beneficial lacewing, ladybug, parasitic wasp, and praying mantid. And it also means less processing to products. So organic farming avoids using additives, antibiotics, genetically modified organisms, growth hormones, and human and industrial waste.
