The shoulder shot is the angle the camera gets of somebody's shoulder in the lower corner of the screen while we (the audience) can see the rest of the scene take place. It is usually done when two people are talking. To view one person speaking, directors or dp's (director of Photography) usually choose an over the shoulder camera shot to get the audience to get a feel of actually being there in the scene with the characters. It's very effective and used often in films. Try noticing how often the next movie you watch uses that type of camera angle
