Generically, Hydra are small, simple, fresh-water animals that can reproduce asexually by budding or sexually by producing sperm and eggs. They have tube-like bodies and a number of tentacles that contain stinging cells called cnidocytes that they use to catch their prey. They have radial symmetry. Hydras are predatory animals belonging to the phylum Cnidaria and the class Hydrazoa. They are related to such things as jellyfish and coral.
Specifically, THE Lernean Hydra was a serpent-like creature from Greek Mythology. It was an ancient water beast that possessed many heads and poisoned breath. It lived in the lake of Lerna in the Argolid, the site of the myth of Danaids. It was yet another offspring of Echidna and Typhoon, the children of Gaia, the goddess of Earth. Heracles, sometimes called Hercules, tried to slay the beast, but found that every time that he cut off one of it's heads, two more grew in it's place. Realizing this, his nephew told him to scorch the neck stumps with a burning firebrand after he cut off each head. Hercules tried this with every one of the heads, and eventually succeeded in destroying the monster.
Also, Hydra is also one of Pluto's moons (named after the mythological beast).

The Hydra symbolizes man's encounter with difficulties in life and obstacles that present themselves while dealing with challenges. One example might include man's temptation by pleasure; as man conquers one temptation, another replaces it. Hence, overwhelming obstacles work to defeat a normal human being; it takes superhuman will to overcome such obstructions.
