Protein mainly repairs cells as it's found in almost every living cell. Protein forms many body structures, including muscles, skin, and hair. t maintains and replaces tissues in your body. Protein manufactures hemoglobin (red blood cells that carry oxygen). It's integral to your body's blod clotting ability. As well, it manufactures antibodies to fight diseases and illnesses. It also forms enyzmes that catalyse chemical reactions throughout your body.

Proteins do a number of things in the human body. But overall, if you're talking about proteins on the cell level...

For one thing, you need to go to the source: The body's DNA structure. Depending on which parts of the DNA are "turned on" and "turned off", this is going to tell your body which types of proteins it produces, and how much of them. Proteins are the building blocks of everything, and they stimulate how the body grows and develops. What hormones are produced, what body tissues are produced, etc. Hormones, fats, carbohydrates, you name it. Most things in essence are proteins. They do a number of things.

As far as protein, in common terms, like, "taking protein supplements", people commonly associate that with muscle building, or meats.

There is a very conspicuous lack of an "s" after function. Proteins are somewhat like the liver in the way that they have many different functions and each is incredibly important. Proteins can provide structural support, aid in digestion (enzymes are proteins - catalyze hydrolysis), communication between cells, movement, storage, transport, and are instrumental in the immune system and fighting off foreign substances.
