From my experience, traces of protein in the urine can be considered normal. If you have concerns with protein in the urine, a dipstick urinalysis can be easily performed in the comforts of your own home. Test your urine each time you go to the restroom. If you have a trace of protein on 2 or more occasions in the same day, it make be worth asking your doctor about. Normal urine contains some protein, but when the protein level consistantly becomes above trace amounts, there could be an underlying kidney problem that should be addressed. Protein in urine can also be the result of excercise, emotional stress, cold or heat exposure, or fever.

∙ 14y agoProtein in your urine is an indication that you have had some injury to one or both kidneys, which causes leakage of chemicals that would normally be retained rather than excreted. This damage is almost certainly the result of a kidney stone. It is probably not a serious condition and does not require treatment. It would only be a problem if you have a diet that is critically low in protein (which could happen if you are a vegetarian).

∙ 14y agoThere should be no protein in urine for one very good reason. In the kidney, blood is filtered so that some molecules diffuse into the nephon. However, protein molecules are too big to diffuse between the capillaries and nephron.
