What does repel mean repel?

Repel means to jump apart..

In magnetism, 'to repel' means to push back or away by a force, as one body acting upon another (opposed to attract): The north pole of one magnet will repel the north pole of another.

Repel means to keep away like mosquito repellent because it keeps them away.

Like poles repel and opposite poles attract.

When two like poles meet they push at each other.
