What does stop loss mean?

Stop Loss occurs, usually during wartime, when military personnel are extended beyond the end of their service contract expiration date. For instance, a highly critical skilled soldier may be due to leave the service on 18 April, 2008. Because his skills are needed and he cannot be easily replaced, that service could 'extend' his contract to a later date without the member's consent. That, in effect would stop his loss from the military - i.e., stop loss.
