The mobile phone network is made up of lots of base stations.

These base stations cover a relatively small area and make up a pattern that looks like 'cells'.

Biological cells or prison cells, the names are derrived from each other.

This kind of network is called a cellular system, becauses of their likeness to a cellular structure.

As you move from one cell to another, your phone automaticllay changes channel and power. This done automatically and without you even knowing or bothering about it, by the power of the compters built into the system and phones.

Clever, eh?

The cell in cell phone is a shortened term for cellular.

Cellular is defined as a mobile radio signal, often in a car that uses a network of short ranged transmitters which uses a central station to make connects to phones called mobile devices.

Oh yea, and cell could also be for science, a basic function of life within a living organism.

Portable phones only have a very limited range, due to aerial size, power available and limits of radiation.

They communicate over a short distance to a local base station, which can then connect them to the wired telecommunications system.

If you move too far from the base station, the signal becomes too weak to work.

To overcome this problem, lots of base stations are set up, each one set at a distance from the other that will maintain a good signal.

To prevent interference caused by them all working on the same frequency, they automatically change channel, without you even noticing.

This network of base stations forms a coverage area of 'Cells', where the phone can get a signal, with a base station aerial at the center of each cell.

I suppose they could have just as easily been called 'Net' phones, but the coverage diagram looked like a system of 'Cells', like plant cells or prison cells.
