Often when the Bible uses this phrase, it means a spouse.
In the King James translation, such use of the word "meet" simply means "suitable, fitting, proper."
Genesis 2:18 - And the LORD God said, It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him an help meet for him.
Here is the New King James translation:
And the Lord God said, "It is not good that man should be alone; I will make him a helper comparable to him."
There are several New Testament examples of this usage, including Luke 15:32:
King James - It was meet that we should make merry, and be glad: for this thy brother was dead, and is alive again; and was lost, and is found.
New King James - 'It was right that we should make merry and be glad, for your brother was dead and is alive again, and was lost and is found.' "
