What does the Bible say about stealing food?

Answer:

Answer

The Bible has a lot to say about stealing.

(1). One of the 10 commandments is not to steal:-

Exo 20:15 Thou shalt not steal.
(Repeated in Deu 5:19)

(2).A thief had to pay restitution of at least double the value of what he had stolen:-

Exo 22:1 "If a man steals an ox or a sheep and kills it or sells it, he must pay back five head of cattle for the ox, and four sheep for the one sheep.

Exo 22:4 If the stolen item should in fact be found alive in his possession, whether it be an ox or a donkey or a sheep, he must pay back double.

Exo 22:7 "If a man gives his neighbor money or articles for safekeeping, and it is stolen from the man's house, if the thief is caught, he must repay double.

Exo 22:9 In all cases of illegal possessions, whether for an ox, a donkey, a sheep, a garment, or any kind of lost item, about which someone says 'This belongs to me,' the matter of the two of them will come before the judges, and the one whom the judges declare guilty must repay double to his neighbor.

(3). Restitution also had to be made if it was accidental and not deliberate:-

Exo 22:5 "If a man grazes his livestock in a field or a vineyard, and he lets the livestock loose and they graze in the field of another man, he must make restitution from the best of his own field and the best of his own vineyard.

Exo 22:6 "If a fire breaks out and spreads to thorn bushes, so that stacked grain or standing grain or the whole field is consumed, the one who started the fire must surely make restitution.

(5). If he couldn't make restitution he was to be sold :-

Exo 22:3 ... A thief must surely make full restitution; if he has nothing, then he will be sold for his theft.

(6).There was no penalty if a thief was caught breaking in at night and was killed:-

Exo 22:2 "If a thief is caught breaking in and is struck so that he dies, there will be no blood guilt for him.

(7). However, following on directly from the previous verse, if the thief was killed during daylight the killer was guilty of murder:-

Exo 22:3 If the sun has risen on him, then there is blood guilt for him. ...

(8). People were to deal honestly with one another.

Lev 19:11 " 'You must not steal, you must not tell lies, and you must not deal falsely with your fellow citizen.

Jer 23:30 So I, the LORD, affirm that I am opposed to those prophets who steal messages from one another that they claim are from me.

Jer 7:9 You steal. You murder. You commit adultery. You lie when you swear on oath. You sacrifice to the god Baal. You pay allegiance to other gods whom you have not previously known.

Deut 25:16 For anyone who acts dishonestly in these ways is abhorrent to the LORD your God.

(9). People were not to use different weights when they were buying compared with when they were selling:-

Deu 25:13, 15-6 NET You must not have in your bag different stone weights, a heavy and a light one. ..[v. 14].You must have an accurate and correct stone weight and an accurate and correct measuring container,..

(10). ALL these rules were still applicable in the New Testament, in intent if not in actual practice.

Mat 19:18 "Which ones?" he asked. Jesus replied, "Do not murder, do not commit adultery, do not steal, do not give false testimony,

Mat 5:17-20 NET "Do not think that I have come to abolish the law or the prophets. I have not come to abolish these things but to fulfill them. [v. 18] I tell you the truth, until heaven and earth pass away not the smallest letter or stroke of a letter will pass from the law until everything takes place. [v. 19] So anyone who breaks one of the least of these commands and teaches others to do so will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever obeys them and teaches others to do so will be called great in the kingdom of heaven. [v. 20] For I tell you, unless your righteousness goes beyond that of the experts in the law and the Pharisees, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.

(11). The disciples' treasurer was Judas who stole from the money-bag they had for food etc:-

Joh 12:6 (Now Judas said this not because he was concerned about the poor, but because he was a thief. As keeper of the money box, he used to steal what was put into it.)

(12). Thieves were to work rather than steal so they could buy food to give to those who didn't have any:-

Eph 4:28 The one who steals must steal no longer; rather he must labor, doing good with his own hands, so that he may have something to share with the one who has need.

(13). The poor were, understandidly, more likely to steal (eg for food) but this still did not make it excusable:-

Pro 30:8-9 NET Remove falsehood and lies far from me;
do not give me poverty or riches,
feed me with my allotted portion of bread,
[v. 9] ... lest I become poor and steal
and demean the name of my God.
