Florida chose the 'In God We Trust' motto because the history of the state involved so many different countries but the trust in God remained the same. The motto was adopted in 2006 but has been on the state seal since 1868.
The current State Seal was chosen in 1985.
Two months after Illinois entered the Union, the new Illinois General Assembly decreed, on February 19, 1819 they decided that a state seal should be made. The state motto isn't really the state motto, more as the adopted motto because of the seal.
