In the original book version of The Wizard of Oz, the Wicked Witch of the West is surprised that Dorothy Gale wins out against her. For the Witch trips Dorothy, and grabs one of the Slippers of the Wicked Witch of the East off Dorothy's foot. She's going to go after the other when Dorothy throws a bucket of water on her. Dorothy apologizes, because she is trying to protect herself and her pet dog Toto. And she sees the Slippers as belonging to her. But the Witch then goes on to indicate that Dorothy shortly will have the Yellow Castle from which the Witch rules over the Winkies. For the Witch admits to wickedness, because of which she always thought herself to have job security in the lands of Oz. It's incomprehensible to her to lose out to such a little girl. And she ends with, Look out - here I go!

In the beloved 1939 film version of 'The Wizard of Oz', the Wicked Witch of the West screams as the water that Dorothy Gale throws hits her in the face. As she's melting, she manages to say:

'Ohhh - you cursed brat! Look what you've done! I'm melting! Melting! Oh - what a world - what a world! Who would have thought a good little girl like you could destroy my beautiful wickedness!? Ohhh! Look out! Look out! I'm going. Ohhhh! Ohhhhhh...'.

The feelings are the same as, but expressed differently from, the original 1900 book edition of the film. In the book 'The Wonderful Wizard of Oz', the Witch says:

'See what you have done! In a minute I shall melt away. Didn't you know water would be the end of me? Well, in a few minutes I shall be all melted, and you will have the castle to yourself. I have been wicked in my day, but I never thought a little girl like you would ever be able to melt me and end my wicked deeds. Look out - here I go!'

No, the Wicked Witch of the East does not die by melting.

According to the original 1900 book edition of "The Wizard of Oz,", the Wicked Witch of the East is killed when Dorothy Gale's farmhouse lands on top of her. That too is her fate in the beloved 1939 film version. It also is the cause of death in the musical "Wicked," which serves as a prequel to the events in the original story.

"Ohhh you cursed brat! Look what you've done!" is what the wicked witch says before "I'm melting" in "The Wizard of Oz."

Specifically, this is what the Wicked Witch of the West says first when water is thrown on her in the beloved 1939 film version. It is a bit different in the original 1900 book edition. There, the words are "See what you have done! In a minute I shall melt away."

It is during the scene in the book where the Witch trips Dorothy and takes one of the magic slippers and in the film where the Witch makes the Scarecrow catch fire that the Wicked Witch of the West starts to melt in "The Wizard of Oz."

Specifically, in the original 1900 book edition, the Witch puts an invisible rod in the path of her prisoner, Dorothy Gale. Dorothy falls, and the witch grabs one of Dorothy's magic slippers. Dorothy douses the witch with water.

In contrast, in the beloved 1939 film version, the five friends are recaptured by the Winkie guards. The guards bring them before the Witch, who lights her broom stick with one of the Castle torches. The Scarecrow catches fire, and Dorothy throws water on the Scarecrow and the Witch.
