Like the maple leaf, the beaver is a symbol of Canada's unity. Maple trees grow in all ten provinces and three territories. Beavers live in all ten provinces and three territories.

Furthermore, the beaver is a symbol of industiousness. It is always busy building dams and tending to them.

The beaver is also an important Canadian historical icon. Beaver pelts were an important trade item and the source of wealth in the early days of what is now Canada.

Because it is usually seen in deep ponds and most of them are in Canada.-------------------------------------------

The felt made from beaver pelts (skin and fur) were used in European hats. Beavers from the New World were of a very high quality and commanded the highest price. So high that a single ship load of beaver pelts could pay for the ship itself, making the risks worth the profit.

That drive for profit lead to the creation of trading forts in Hudson's Bay, and then deep inland. That brought Europeans deep into the heart of what is today Western Canada to explore, trade, settle and eventually colonize.

Beavers or rather killing them, built Canada.

The official symbol of Canada, which is on the Canadian flag, is a maple leaf. Beavers are associated with Canada but are not the symbol of Canada. Beaver pelts were literally the first commercial product exported from the part of North America that would eventually become Canada, and were the economic basis for the original wave of European Immigration to Canada, so there is no question that beavers have played an important role in Canadian history. Note that the beaver pelts were used to make felt for hats, they were not sewn together into beaver fur coats. Today there is no longer any market for beaver felt. Fashion is very quirky.
