Well, the earth revolves around the sun, and the moon (while it also revolves around the sun) revolves around the earth revolving around the sun.

On the earth one year is 365 days, on the moon one year is 24 hours.

Beyond that I can't say, but I'm sure there are other minor differences, axis etc. \ WRONG WRONG WRONG AND WRONG AGAIN. What are you people saying!?

The term "Blue Moon" has been accepted as meaning "the second full moon in a calendar month".

I'm not sure I can agree with this. The folk saying "Once in a blue moon" used to mean "very rare"; and yet, there are months with two full moons about every year. That's not all that "rare".

The meaning of "blue moon" has changed over the years; we can't be certain of what the phrase "once in a blue moon" originally meant.

Does the Moon ever actually look blue? Yes, it can; volcanic ash high in the atmosphere can cause the Moon to appear blue. But that's not the current "generally accepted" meaning. These days, we use the phrase "blue moon" to refer to the second full moon within a calendar month. The lunar cycle is 29 days long; months are (except for February) 30 or 31 days long. So if the Moon is full on the 1st or 2nd, the Moon will be full again on the 30th or 31st. That happens about every other year.

In fact, if there is a "blue moon" in January, there will usually be one in March of that year!

The unit of time we call a "month" is an approximation of the synodic period of the Moon. If months and synods were exactly the same, there would be 13 months in every year. Somebody must have thought 12 would be easier to work with.

Anyway, there's usually one full Moon every month, but not on the same date of every month. Since the Moon has 13 synods, each of 29 1/2 days, in 30- or 31-day months (28 or 29 in February), it happens a little earlier in each succeeding month.

Eventually there comes a month when the Full Moon is on the 1st or 2nd, and then again on the 30th or 31st. That second Full Moon in the same month is the "blue Moon." February will never get a blue Moon; it's just too short.

They are both satellites to an object which means that they are similar. The moon revolves around the earth, while it is also orbiting around the sun. There is really no difference, but the moon is a satellite that revolves around an object that is turning, and the earth is an object that only turns around the sun.

If you had 3 balls the first one (the sun) would stay still the second one (the earth) would move around the first one, and the third one, (the moon) would move around the second one while the second one moved around the first one. Get it?

  • The Earth is about 4 times as big (in diameter)
  • The Moon is full of craters
  • The Earth has a much higher albedo (percentage of reflected light)
  • The color is also quite different

The main difference between the two is their size. The Moon is a quarter of the diameter of the Earth, and has only 1/81 of its mass. Most of the Moon's differences stem from this size difference. The Moon is too small to retain an atmosphere, so on the Moon there is no wind, no oxygen for breathing, and no life. The lack of weather on the Moon means that any marks on the Moon, be they craters from impacts or footprints from astronauts, will stay there for a very long time because there is no water or wind to destroy them, unlike on Earth. The Moon's diminutive nature also means that you would weight less on it because of the reduced gravity. When you watch old film of astronauts on the moon, it may not seem like they weigh only a tenth of what they would on Earth, but that is because all the extra gear they need in their suits to keep them alive weighs a lot. The sky would also be much more spectacular on the Moon. Our atmosphere obscures a lot of the night sky, and because of the dispersion of the Sun's light through our atmosphere, we are virtually blind to the sky during the day, instead seeing only our blue sky. On the moon this problem does not exist, so one would be treated to a constant, clear view of the Earth and the stars that fill our local part of the universe.

No. The term blue moon refers to an extra full moon in a month or in a season, not its colour.

but even though the term might not be refering to a blue colored moon, the moon can appear to turn blue as the ozone layer (which makes the sky look blue) can act a blue gel which gives a tint of blue to the light coming of the moon

Yes a moon could be composed of blue minerals but the earth moon is not.

Is it possible to have a blue moon and a solar eclipse at the same time?

No. A blue moon happens when there is a second full moon. A solar eclipse happens when there is a new moon and it is right between the sun and the earth. But it is possible to have a blue moon and a lunar eclipse at the same time.

Why do things happen in a blue moon?

The term "blue moon" comes from folklore. Different traditions and conventions place the extra "blue" full moon at different times in the year .In calculating the dates for Lent and Easter the Clergy identify the Lent Moon. It is thought that historically when the moons timing was too early, they named an earlier moon as a "betrayer moon" (belewe moon), thus the Lent moon came at its expected time.Folklore gave each moon a name according to its time of year. A moon that came too early had no folk name, and was called a blue moon, retaining the correct seasonal timings for future moons .The Farmers Almanac defined blue moon as an extra full moon that occurred in a season; one season was normally three full moons. If a season had four full moons, then the third full moon was named a blue moon.Recent popular usage defined a blue moon as the second full moon in a calendar month, stemming from an interpretation error made in 1946 that was discovered in 1999. For example, December 31, 2009 was a blue moon according to this usage.A "blue moon" is also used colloquially to mean "a rare event", reflected in the phrase "once in a blue moon". The most literal meaning of blue moon is when the moon (not necessarily a full moon) appears to a casual observer to be unusually bluish, which is a rare event. The effect can be caused by smoke or dust particles in the atmosphere, as has happened after forest fires in Sweden and Canada in 1950 and 1951
